Water Service Taxes

After successfully registering with the water company, there is still one thing to take into account: taxes. There are two types of water-related taxes: sewerage tax (Rioolheffing) and water board tax (Waterschapsbelasting).

Sewerage Tax

The annual sewerage tax, known as “Rioolheffing,” serves as a means of funding the upkeep and maintenance of the municipal sewer system to which you are registered. This tax supports essential activities such as hole repairs, well vacuuming, and the replacement of sewer system components. Therefore, users of the sewer system contribute to this fund since they discharge wastewater into it. The tax consists of a fixed amount that homeowners are obligated to pay.

Water Board Tax

Another annual tax is the water board tax, known as “Waterschapsbelasting,” which is assessed based on your registration within a specific region as of January 1st. This tax is crucial for preserving water quality and ensuring the maintenance of dunes, dikes, and quays in your area.

Initially, the Waterschapsbelasting invoice is sent to the homeowner. However, if the property is rented, it is the responsibility of the new tenant to cover this tax, as they are the ones utilizing the property. In such cases, You will then receive the tax letter by mail from the according company.. The tax amount remains a fixed annual sum.

If you live with several people at one address, only one person will receive the tax notice. It is essential for all occupants to contribute to this payment. If you change your address during the year, you are still liable for the entire year’s tax in your former region.

However, in your new region, you may either be charged again but reimbursed to prevent double payment within the same year or be billed in the subsequent calendar year. The aim is to ensure that you only pay this tax only once a year.
